like my mama always told us "if you think it you might as well say it"! I learned a long
time ago that writing helps me deal with any issues I might have. So Rants and
Raves is a way for me to say my piece. These are just my thoughts and opinions; we
all know what they say about opinions. What I say here is not aimed at anyone, I'm
just speaking my mind but then again like my mama always said "if the shoe fits wear
it"! It is not my intent to offend anyone, but I have a right to voice my opinion and
believe me I will. I hope you enjoy Rants and Raves.
Hoodoo Kings and Queens
I have been called, mama, sister, mother, auntie and Queen Starr. I'm here to tell
you right now I am not a Queen nor will I ever be or do I strive to be one. I know it's
a way of showing respect for me but it makes me uncomfortable. I strive everyday to
keep myself humble and use the gifts God has blessed me with to help those in
need. The only power I hold is the personal power of my Sun sign Leo. The power
that makes it possible for me to succeed in my work all comes from God my
heavenly Father, my ancestors, saints and spirits that I am blessed to have work
with me. Being a Leo I have always kept myself in check so I don't get the big head.
As far as I know there are NO Kings and Queens in Hoodoo, Conjure or Rootwork! If
they set their self up to think they are then they are in for a mighty big fall when God
puts them on their knee's. I figure God is like everything else in life; he gives you
just enough rope to hang yourself with. I for one don't intend to test him. When I am
working and the spirit is on me, I KNOW I have the power to move the world but the
key word here is "Spirit". Its a power that is loaned to me to get a job done. I'm not
saying I'm weak by any means; I'm a very strong person and I know it! My point is
that when faced with some of the work I have succeeded at it took more than the
power I hold to get it done.
There are some folks who strive their whole life to be somebody, to be the best;
they need that to make themselves feel powerful. They don't realize that true power
comes from the inside. People can tell you all day long how great you are, but in the
end when you look in the mirror at night you know the truth. I have never
understood that power hungry, need to be the best mentality. I realize that their
God mentality comes from trying to cover up their own short comings. I feel sorry
for these folks because in the end when all the fans are gone they are still stuck
with themselves. People always figure the truth out about this type of person and in
the end all the fans just fade away. Then what you have left is a King or a Queen
without a kingdom to serve their high ego. What a crushing blow that will be to an
already low self esteem.
I have no aspirations to be a Queen of anything; except my own life's path. Hoodoo
has become a money making business; don't fall into the trap of those Hoodoo
Kings and Queens out there who have a need to be the top dog. If you are
searching for someone to put on a pedestal then set yourself up there. Reach for
the sky because there is unlimited success out there waiting for you. Look inside
yourself and find your true power!
Traditional Hoodoo
I am a traditional conjure worker. I started working in my early twenties. Over the
last six years I have noticed a growing TREND in Hoodoo. More and More people
are finding Rootwork. With this there is a lot of confusion about what traditional
Hoodoo is. I'm going to be very blunt here, I usually try to curb my opinions but I
need to say this. Ten years ago Hoodoo was looked at as nothing more than ole
wives tales, or a bunch of superstition. Then information about Rootwork came to
the web. People started taking notice and realizing that Conjure work was not the
ole wives tales they thought it was. That Hoodoo, Rootwork or Conjure whatever
name you give the work was very POWERFUL. This caused all types of people to
claim Conjure as their own.
I don't have an issue with folks learning rootwork, I think it is fantastic! This means
the work will live on. I do how ever have a problem with people coming into Conjure
work and trying to change the work to suit them. I told you I was going to be blunt. I
don't mean to be disrespectful here but Hoodoo is NOT Witchcraft, Neo Pagan, New
age,or anything else except Hoodoo. Weather people like it or not traditional
Rootworkers are Christians. We call on God for help, we work with the psalm, we
work with our Bibles, we work with the Saints, we work with the Trinity God the
Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. People can't change these FACTS no
matter how they may want too! If you remove these aspects from the work then you
are NOT doing Conjure work. That would be like us telling a witch or pagan that they
didn't need to work with their God or Goddess. Do you know how far we would get?
Do you see how disrespectful that is? So my question is why in the hell do folks
think they can come into Conjure and change it to suit themselves? Don't try to
change a tradition that has worked for a hundred years. If you have an issue with
God, the Bible, the psalm, and prayers to God then stay out of Hoodoo it is not for
you. I told you I was going to be blunt and I am! If you try to mix match the work to
suit yourself then please reframe from calling it Hoodoo. If you don't empower your
work with God, the ancestors, spirit or the Saints then don't call what you are doing
Hoodoo because it is NOT! If you can't take the tradition of Conjure AS IT IS then
please leave the work alone. I don't mean to be rude but facts are facts and you
can't change them.
Hoodoo is NOT a religion for better words it is a work of magic. Voodoo, Palo,
Santeria or any other RELIGION is NOT Hoodoo. They have their own ways of doing
things. I truly don't understand why people have a need or think they have a right to
just mix and match things as they go along. Some are under the misconception that
Hoodoo is a free for all; you can just do the work the way you want too. My advice to
you is to get off the Internet, get out of the books and go to the South; find yourself
some Old Style Hoodoo practitioners and talk to them. Then you will see what real
conjure work is all about. I'm not saying that you can't find Old Style workers on the
Internet; I'm just saying you first need to know what you are looking for!

What Makes A Good RootWorker

In order to be a good at working for others the first thing you need to do and one of
the most important things is to learn to listen. You need to learn to be quite and
listen to what the client has to say. Then you need to choose your response to them
very carefully. You have to act like a professional at all times, when you are dealing
with a client. You also need to remember that what a client tells you MUST stay with
you. You have to keep their visits confidential just as if you were a doctor or a
lawyer. In other words you have to know how to keep your mouth shut. You have to
keep your personal opinions to yourself. If you want a repeat business from the
same client then you need to know how to choose your words; what I mean is you
need to know when to be blunt and when to be soothing. People go to workers for
all different reasons. Sometimes it’s no more than just to have someone listen to
them and to give them advice. I have been working professionally since I was
twenty-five, that’s over half my life. Most of my customer’s have been coming to me
for years. I work only by word of mouth. In order to get an appointment with me you
have to know one of my regular customer’s. I choose who I work for, I don’t do this
for a living; it’s more of a calling for me. I don’t look at my customers as dollar signs.
Do I work for free? No, but helping the client is more important to me than the
money.
If a worker works just for the sake of making money then eventually they will be
headed for trouble. Why; because they will lose their ethics in order to make a
dollar. I have a client who started coming to me about nine years ago. This woman
didn’t have two cents to rub together. She had three children and a husband who
wasn’t worth a damn. The minute she came into my house I knew she needed help,
but she couldn’t pay for it. I didn’t want to insult her so I told her the next time she
came just to bring me a gift as payment. For about three years this women paid me
in candles. Then one day she called, I hadn’t heard from her for a while. She wanted
to come for a reading, so I told her to come on. I was expecting to see the usual bag
with the candles in it. What I wasn’t expecting was the five one hundred dollar bills
she laid on my kitchen table; or the new client she brought with her. What I am
trying to get across is don’t make the money your main focus for working. Yes it is
important to get paid for the work you do; but if you show a little understanding and
kindness in the long run you will have a client who will come to you again and again;
Rather than making a couple of hundred dollars one time only. When you take on
the responsibility of being a professional Rootworker you are not only bound by
ethics; but you are bound by the spirit to be an honest worker. If you cheat your
clients in the long run you are hurting yourself.
I’m not talking about the rule of three or any of that other crap new agers spew. I’m
talking about dealing with Spirit. Unless you are dealing with dark spirits to get your
work done, you will eventually lose your powers to work if you cheat your clients. I’
m not trying to scare anyone I’m trying to give good advice. What do I mean by
cheating, for one thing making the client believe that they need to have work done,
by causing them problems so they will have to come to you to fix them, taking their
money and not doing the job you were paid to do, selling them junk that you know
has not been empowered, the list is long. You will be able to get away with it for a
while but eventually spirit will put a stop to it and you will have more problems than
you can handle.
Another thing you have to help yourself first, if you can’t keep your life running
smoothly how will you help someone else. If your life is turned upside down then
you will not do anyone any good. You have to be prosperous in order to bring
prosperity into your life. If you can’t bring the things you need into your own life
how will you bring them into your client’s life. There’s more to being a professional
worker than burning candles, making powders, oils, and washes. You have to keep
your own self on the right track in order to be able to help others. This job is not for
everyone; it takes commitment, integrity, ethics, knowledge, responsibility, and
hard work. After all you are dealing with other people’s lives who trust you and
depend on you to do the right thing. Doing this type of work has to be a way of life
not just a way to make a fast buck. This is one of those things that you really need to
think about before you leap into it. I’m not trying to discourage anyone; I’m just
