Spiritual Foot Washing
Spiritual foot washing is a ritual that has slide to the wayside over the years. Where in days
gone by people of the church did foot washing at special times of the year; now most people
don’t know what it is or what it stands for. In the days before Jesus was hung on the cross it
was custom for the lowest slave in a house to wash visitors feet before they entered the
home. They wore sandals in those days, the roads and walk ways were dirt. So their feet were
dirty. People in those days were insulted if they were asked to wash someones feet, that job
belong to the lowest of slaves. The night of the last supper when Jesus suggested to his
apostles that they have a foot washing they were all insulted. Who of them was so lowly
thought of that he must wash the others feet; some of them flat out refused. I don’t think
any of them understood what Jesus was doing when he took off his outer robes, wrapped a
towel around his waist and drew a basin of warm water. You can find this in your bible in the
book of John 13 v 3- 10. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all the things into his
hands, and that he came forth from God, and goeth unto God,
4riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments; and he took a towel, and girded himself.
5Then he poureth water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe
them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6So he cometh to Simon Peter. He saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt
understand hereafter.
8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee
not, thou hast no part with me.
9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10Jesus saith to him, He that is bathed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every
whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
This was the birth of spiritual foot washing; Jesus did it to bless his apostles after the last
supper, because he knew what the morrow would bring. He wanted to leave them with a
blessing. The apostles didn’t have a clue to the blessing Jesus was bestowing on them. Some
spiritual workers have been blessed with the gift of cleansing and healing. Spiritual foot
washing not only cleanses but it also heals and blesses the person getting the foot washing
done.
The person giving the foot washing also comes away from it with a peaceful heart. This is a
tradition that is dying out, it’s a tradition that would be a shame to lose. Below is a picture of
the wash pan I use to give family members, myself and clients foot washings in.
