Using Chalk in Hoodoo
I was taught as a young worker to use white chalk to mark my doors, my windows, and and
in Hoodoo. Today most workers use what is called cascarilla, which is powdered eggshells.
Cascarilla is used in VooDoo, Santeria, Palo and other religions to Mark things with. The use
and traditions are dying out and being replaced with something else that is not Hoodoo.
I don't mean any disrespect to anyone I am just stating the facts. It's possible that cascarilla
is used in New Orleans style hoodoo but it is not used in true southern style conjure. I am a
very traditional conjure worker, I don't like all these changes that I see being made to
Hoodoo. Again I mean no disrespect to any body, but if you went to Georgia, Mississippi, or
South Carolina, and asked old folks there what cascarilla was they wouldn't have a clue what
you were talking about. Unless they were on-line and read it somewhere; which I doubt.
Everytime someone removes something from the old way root workers have worked for
many years they are changing Hoodoo. Whether they mean to do this or not it is being done.
I think a lot of this has to do with not having the knowledge or I should say not having all
the knowledge of some of the old works. When folks don't understand how to work with
something they to the end to change it to suit their needs. I think that the use of chalk in
conjure is being lost because folks don't know about it or what to do with it; so it is now being
replaced with cascarilla. I was told a couple months ago that I'm forgetting all old works that
I know; I plan to rectify that now. I will be adding a lot of old simple but powerful conjure
tricks that I was taught as a young girl. I would love to see that use of chalk brought back
into Hoodoo and use like it was in the old days. There is nothing wrong with cascarilla but
that is is not Hoodoo, the use of cascarilla belongs to other things.
You can get a box of white chalk for a little bit of nothing at the dollar store. All you have to
do is take that chalk out-of-the-box and pray Psalm 23 over them. Then set you up three
white vigils in the shape of a triangle and place your chalk in the center of the set up. Go
daily to your altar and repeat Psalm 23 over them until your vigils burn out. Once your vigils
burn out your chalk is ready to use in your work. You can use this chalk for many things,
from bringing blessings to crossing someone up. This is a tool that is very useful and very
powerful in conjure. I don't want to see its use lost.
Again I would like to say that I'm in no disrespect towards anyone I'm just stating facts the
way they are. I hope some of you will add the use of chalk to your rootwork.
